Movement in the Harbor: Transdisciplinary Flows and Encounters in Art
2025 Pier-2 Waving Waves Community International Art Forum

The Pier-2 Artist-in-Residence (PAIR) program, launched in 2015, is grounded in the principles of supporting contemporary artistic creation, promoting arts education, fostering international exchange, and engaging local communities. It invites artists from around the world to undertake residencies at the Pier-2 Art Center. In 2019, PAIR initiated the “Pier-2 Waving Waves Community (Pier-2 WWC)”, which aims to connect art and cultural institutions across international harbor cities, addressing issues of urban and cultural fluidity while fostering international dialogue and collaboration. The first edition, organized in collaboration with the Port Journeys Project in Yokohama, Japan, brought together international art space organizers, scholars, and artists to explore artistic practices and cultural exchange in harbor cities. In 2020, PAIR collaborated with the Taiwan Art Space Alliance (TASA), focusing on cultural equity and inclusivity within the context of artist residencies. After a pandemic hiatus, the third edition in 2024, themed Technology, was held in collaboration with the Taiwan Culture X Technology Expo (TTXC)’s Tech Residency program, examining how AI interventions reshape residency practices and future creative possibilities.
In 2025, the program will continue its established trajectory under the annual theme “Movement in the Harbor: Transdisciplinary Flows and Encounters in Art.” Anchored in the concept of “Harbor × Movement,” the edition invites domestic and international art institutions, curators, and artists whose practices resonate with geographical contexts and historical continuities. It seeks to examine how art is generated through mobility and interconnected across boundaries, while reconsidering the definitions of artist-in-residence and transdisciplinary collaboration from both institutional and creative perspectives. By engaging local art communities and residency exhibition, the program aspires to set sail from the harbor and look back toward the land, responding to the city’s transformation and renewal within the fluid landscape of culture.
Station in the motion: Artist-in-Residence as a Bridge|Invitation Only
Artist-in-residence institutions play multiple roles — as mediators, art guides, and platforms. This talk brings together representatives from international art organizations in the Netherlands, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan to discuss how such institutions serve as bridges connecting artists with local communities and cities. The conversation will also explore what functions these bridges should embody and how, through their own networks and resources, they can maximize their potential as relay stations within the dynamic flow of artistic creation.

Station in the motion: Art Residency Institutions and Their Responses to Urban Contexts|Public Talk
As representatives of their local regions, artist-in-residence institutions introduce artists from around the world to engage in site-specific creation and research, responding to the city through their own networks. This talk invites art organizations from the Netherlands and Japan—both sharing similar geographical contexts—as well as a professor from the Department of Oceanography at National Sun Yat-sen University. Taking the Pier-2 Artist-in-Residence Program as a starting point, the discussion will explore how a city’s historical layers, geographical environment, and institutional contexts reflect and influence one another, and how interdisciplinary collaboration and co-creation may emerge from these exchanges.

The Body in Motion: Pathways of Artistic Creation|Public Talk
“What is artist residency?” Beyond the circulation and mutual influence of international artistic exchange, residencies allow artists to temporarily stay at various institutions around the world to conduct in-depth cultural research and creative work rooted in local contexts. Starting from the idea of the artist’s own “movement of the body,” this talk invites artists from the Philippines and Korea to share their ongoing experiences of movement and anchoring, as well as the ripples and connections that emerge through their time in residence.

The Body in Motion: From Creative Displacement to Food Culture|Workshop
During an artist's residency or site-specific creation, the everyday aspects of food, clothing, shelter, and mobility often play a crucial role in shaping creative practices, while also reflecting the historical and cultural layers of a city or nation. In this workshop, Taiwanese artist and food creator Yu-Chi Lo will share her own creative experiences and guide participants in using local ingredients as a medium to collaboratively craft a meal that transcends nationality and engages deeply with the local context.
