To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the National Museum of History, the museum is hosting “Crossing 70: Museum Collection Management and Exhibition Interpretation Forum,” an event designed to spark cross-border dialogue and exchange. The forum features a keynote speech by Professor Yujin Yaguchi, Vice President of the University of Tokyo, titled “Where Is This From? Teaching Provenance in the Age of Global Museums,” and brings together leading curators and scholars from Taiwan’s museums and academic communities. Focusing on two central themes—“The Conservation, Preservation, and Value of Museum Collections” and “Exhibition Narrative and Interpretations Based on Museum Collections”—the discussions span topics from cultural policy and conservation ethics to collection studies and curatorial practices. Marking seventy years of NMH’s legacy, the forum reflects on its past and envisions a new era where collections connect culture, memory, and society.
▌Three Highlights of the Forum
Rethinking Museums × Intersections with Art History
From the curatorial perspectives of Taiwanese art history, this session examines how museums position themselves between knowledge production and interpretation. It redefines museums not just as exhibition spaces but as active agents in cultural discourse and art history writing.
Asian Voices × New Dialogues on Modernity
Featuring Professor Yujin Yaguchi, Vice President of the University of Tokyo, the forum explores provenance education from a global view, encouraging reflection on cultural context and ethical responsibility. It also reimagines how Taiwan's museums can contribute to regional collaboration and the shared vision of Asian museums.
Inside the Museum × Learning from Practice
Through case sharing and discussion with museum and academic professionals, participants will gain practical insights into curation and collection management. A guided tour of the National Museum of History’s permanent and special exhibitions offers a closer look at its collection philosophy and future direction.
