《民主之眼》三部曲，第一部〈破繭〉描述的是臺灣自二戰後至2000年代民主化的法制改革歷程。影片中介紹了白色恐怖以及美麗島事件、機場事件、520農民運動、野百合學運、遠化罷工等1980-1990年代重大社會運動。這段時期是台灣社會運動最頻繁的時期，同時也為日後民主法制改革鋪路。影片中透過人權運動家艾琳達、攝影家劉振祥、謝三泰、潘小俠、黃子明、蔡明德等人，以及曾經參與學運的社會學者陳信行，詳述當年這些事件的始末。
The "Eyes on Democracy" Trilogy, Part 1 "Break the Cocoon," describes Taiwan's legal reforms from the post-World War II era to the democratization in the 2000s. The film introduces significant historical events such as the White Terror, the Kaohsiung Incident, the Airport Incident, the 520 Farmer Movement, the Wild Lily Movement, and the Far Eastern Corporation Strike, all of which took place during the 1980s and 1990s. This period was the most active time for social movements in Taiwan, and it paved the way for future democratic legal reforms. Through human rights activists such as Linda Gail Arrigo, photographer Liu Chen-hsiang, Hsieh San-tai, Pan Hsiao-hsia, Huang Tzu-ming, and Tsai Ming-te, as well as sociologist Chen Hsin-hsing, who once participated in student movements, the film provides a detailed account of the beginnings and outcomes of these events.
